Jersey City residents will decide who will be the city’s newest mayor.
The city runs non-partisan elections for mayor and there are seven candidates on the ballot.
Current Mayor Steven Fulop is stepping down after three terms and a failed gubernatorial run to become the next president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City – a business organization.
This election’s candidates include former school board president Mussab Ali, police officer Christina Freeman, musician Kalki Jayne-Rose, former Democratic New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, Hudson County Commissioner and former City Councilman Bill O'Dea, City Councilman James Solomon and current City Council President Joyce Watterman.
Voters say this is one of the most competitive mayoral races the city has seen in more than 20 years.
There might not be a clear winner on Election Day. With a tight race, if none of the candidates receive more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will go head-to-head in a Dec. 2 runoff.
According to city records, the last time this happened was in 2001.
