A Kingsbridge bakery owner says a new bike lane on Bailey Avenue is hurting her business. Gladys Grijalva has owned Sugargirl Bakery for 17 years and wants to stay in the neighborhood. But she says dropping sales may push her out. She says sales have dropped about 60 percent since the Department of Transportation installed a two-way bike lane along the corridor in November. She says customers who once stopped by quickly are now struggling to find parking near her store. "If somebody goes and drives around the block, once, when they don't find parking, they're just going to go elsewhere," Grijalva said. Residents say parking in the area has become more difficult, with some drivers even parking in the bike lane at night because there are so few spots available. DOT says the redesign is meant to make Bailey Avenue safer. A spokesperson for the department sent News 12 the following statement: "This redesign makes traveling on Bailey Avenue, one of The Bronx's most dangerous streets, safer for everyone by providing pedestrian and bus boarding islands, dedicated cycling space, and streamlined traffic patterns for drivers. These design features have been successfully installed across the city and are proven tools to save lives and are good for local businesses."
