Community members gathered in Kingsbridge Tuesday night calling for safer streets after a series of shootings left several teenagers dead.

Neighbors, faith leaders and grieving families came together for a “Safer Streets” rally, saying too many young people in the Bronx are caught up in gun violence — and in some cases pulling the trigger themselves.

One of the teens remembered during the rally was Christopher Redding, a 16-year-old high school football player whose family said had a promising future.

Police say Redding was running along West 238th Street and Broadway during the evening rush on Feb. 12 when gunfire broke out. Two other people were shot during the incident.

Redding later died from his injuries.

Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a dispute that began inside a nearby McDonald’s involving a group of teenagers and the victim.

Police arrested a 17-year-old nearly a week later, charging the teen with murder and other serious offenses, but three other suspects remain on the run.

Organizers say they hope events like this will bring attention to the violence impacting young people and encourage stronger efforts to prevent future tragedies.
