Brooklyn is the first borough to see new crime-fighting tools installed on its streets.
As of last week, new surveillance cameras were placed atop lampposts along Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick. The cameras are part of the city?s new anti-terror program. The cameras are visible, so residents know they are being watched. The city?s subways are also equipped with the cameras.
The high-tech surveillance program will eventually place 500 cameras throughout the city at a cost of $9 million. Before the cameras were installed in Brooklyn, a pilot program was successful in the Bronx.
