The Manhattan College Jaspers took home Division I bragging rights with a win in the annual Battle of the Bronx women's basketball match versus the Fordham Rams Sunday.
A late scoring run boosted the Jaspers to a 65-53 win over their division rivals. The Jaspers outscored the Rams 21-9 in the final seven minutes to take control of the game for good.
Gabrielle Cottrell led the Jaspers to victory, scoring a game-high 18 points. Cottrell hit a three-pointer and two free throws in the waning minutes to seal the victory for the Jaspers.
Manhattan improved its record to 1-1 with the win. The season-opening loss gives Fordham an 0-1 start.
The men's hoops squads will meet later in the season. This year's competition marks the 100th anniversary of the rivalry.
