A large chunk of the road caved in on 56th Street in Sunset Park Tuesday, prompting police to block off traffic in the area.
The street has been closed between Fifth and Sixth avenues since around 12 p.m., police say.
Residents jokingly called Sunset Park the "Sinkhole Capital," referencing the frequency with which such holes emerge in the neighborhood.
In the summer of 2015, another large sinkhole opened nearby on 64th Street. That hole still hasn't been repaired.
National Grid crews went door to door in the area after residents reported they did not have gas.
The Department of Environmental Protection says it is checking water and sewer lines in the area.
Officials say there have not been any reports of injury.
