A congressman is pushing for millions of additional dollars to restore the city's largest park, Brooklyn's Gateway National Park, to its former glory.

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-9th Congressional District) wants $1.5 million in federal funding to build new cricket fields at Floyd Bennett Field, which is at the park. The lawmaker also wants more than $6 million to restore the visitor's center, which has hosted some of the biggest names in aviation, such as Howard Hughes. The congressman says crumbling ceilings, floors and walls pose a safety risk. Weiner wants to turn the center into a museum.

Weiner says he understands getting funding won't be easy. "We're competing for resources with parks all around the country: Grand Canyon, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park." The congressman previously helped secure more than $60 million in funding for upgrades that are complete or underway at the Brooklyn park.

Gateway National Park officials say more than 4 million people visited the destination last year. The park takes up some 19,000 acres.
