A city legislator wants to make the Coney Island boardwalk a designated landmark.
Councilman Mark Treyger wants to preserve the boardwalk for future generations and thinks the city should take the extra step to make it a landmark.
For decades, the boardwalk has been a place for families to enjoy the Wonder Wheel or grab a bite of one of Nathan's Famous hot dogs.
The city's Parks Department has converted some of the stretch to concrete and fake wood, reportedly claiming that it is more durable than wood and less expensive.
But during Superstorm Sandy, some residents say the wood portion of the boardwalk actually held up better than the concrete. Landmark status would make it so that any proposed changes would require stringent approval.
Treyger believes the worldwide appeal of the boardwalk meets the criteria for landmark designation.
The councilman says he is drafting a proposal to submit to the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission for consideration.
