Elected officials and community organizations are getting behind the “Less is More Act – a bill that they say will reduce the number of people held in jail and prison in New York.
According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, New York incarcerates more people on parole for technical violations like missing an appointment with an officer than any other state in the country, besides Illinois.
The act's provisions include providing earned time credits, bolstering due process, providing speedy hearings and restricting the use of incarceration for technical violations.
"We're fighting to change what I believe, and many would say, are draconian policies that many would say does not promote the redemptive spirit of democracy," says Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
