Local elected leaders, like Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, came together in a joint statement to speak out against Mayor Eric Adams' proposal for McGuinness Boulevard.
Adams announced a plan to install a bike lane on the southern portion of McGuinness Boulevard.
The statements reads in part, "Mayor Adams is going forward with a plan that fails Greenpoint by preserving the most dangerous elements of this roadway that runs through the middle of our community. We will not stop fighting until we successfully prioritize the safety of our neighbors above all else."
Greenpoint residents say cyclists have become an additional danger on the road.
“While we are trying to pass the intersection, we do have to wait for a very long time," said Alex Shang, of Greenpoint. "I almost got hit by one.”
Other residents told News 12 that the green paint makes riding conditions dangerous, which creates a domino effect for pedestrians and drivers.
“It is extremely slippery and anything that goes on it with wheels is going down," another Greenpoint resident said. "It’s just a death trap for everybody. If you’re on wheels don’t take the bike lane.”
News 12 reached out to the mayor's office for comment and are waiting to hear back as of Tuesday night.
