Elected officials and the Brooklyn district attorney have announced a new push to combat gun violence after the uptick in shootings this year across the city.
Getting guns off the streets is the goal for local leaders, with the city seeing a spike in gun violence this year -- 51 homicides in September alone, according to police data.
Two days ago, a fatal shooting happened on Coney Island.
"Gun violence is sadly on the rise. Last year in August there were 91 shootings across New York City. This year there were 242. An increase that is just simply unacceptable," said state Sen. Andrew Gounardes.
Gounardes, Councilman Justin Brannan and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced a renewed push to get illegal guns off the street. That includes legislation to raise the penalties for gun traffickers and requires the state to publish reports on the origins of illegal guns coming into the city.
The anti-gun violence plan also includes efforts to expand the gun buyback program and cut off the flow of guns to the city from states with lax gun laws.
Gonzalez has attributed much of the gun violence to the lack of resources to fight gun crimes during the pandemic, with courts being closed and about 20% of the police department being unavailable due to the coronavirus.
NYPD data shows that this September had the highest number of gun arrests in decades. Gonzalez says he's confident that the number of shootings will go down as the year progresses.
