After a Memorial Day Weekend washout and cold, windy conditions the first half of last weekend, the Jersey Shore is hoping for better weather to kick off June.

Under cloudless skies, the Seaside Heights boardwalk, mostly empty to welcome the month of June.

“I think it’s quiet which is nice for local. It's weird not having crowds here,” said Allanagh Palma, of Toms River.

Across the street at Jimmy’s Breakfast, owner David Boukili says he’s off to his slowest start in years. Keeping prices in check is one way to get what folks are here – to keep coming back.

“Can you ever make money back from an important weekend lost like Memorial Day weekend? Never, you’ll never make it up. Trust me. Weekend is gone, weekend is gone so on to the next weekend,” said Boukili.

Boukili says the higher gas prices, unseasonably chilly temperatures and that forgettable washed-out weekend all led to day trippers avoiding the beach.

With the troublesome month of May now in the rearview mirror, the owners of Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach say they have a host of free events coming up to boost the crowds before the schools get out, weather permitting.

“We had our dog-day yesterday. Father’s Day dads get to ride and go to the waterpark for free when they bring their kid, and we have a 3K lazy river race this year on Monday, June 22, said Maria Saltzman, of Casino Pier and Breakwater Beach.

“We’re going to go back grab our beach chairs hang out on the beach and just enjoy the day,” said Tom Partyka, of Seaside Heights.
