The impact of inflation is hitting closer to home for more people on Long Island in need of food.

Long Island Cares says it has seen a 90% increase in the number of people in need of food in just a year.

"...The inflation rate is very high and things expensive so it's a big help here," says Anthony Caruso.

Michael Haynes, chief government affairs officer for Long Island Cares, says many people are relying on their pantries to stay afloat and many of those in need are employed and still can't find a way to make ends meet.

He says they are paying 20% more this year so they have to make certain choices in what they purchase.

Haynes says they will not be turning anyone away.

"That's not an option," Haynes says. "One way or another we're going to get the food that the community needs."

The food bank says those who want to help can do so by donating food or sharing their posts on social media.
