Long Island natives who were in Florida during Hurricane Ian are now checking out the damage caused by the storm.

Michael Rinere, of Huntington, says it was a terrifying few hours as the storm tore through the western portion of the state. He was visiting his parents in Venice when Ian's winds knocked out power and rattled the house.

"All night long, we heard branches banging off the roof and slamming into the side of the house," Rinere says.

He says neighbors lost their pool screens, trees were down in the middle of the lake and roads were completely flooded.

Chuck Wilkinson moved from Port Jefferson to Ponce Inlet seven years ago.

He says there was a curfew, with no one was allowed on the roads.

"It would be totally unsafe," Wilkinson says.

Some say the hurricane knocked down massive trees and street signs in their neighborhoods.

Others from Long Island who were in Florida tell News 12 that they have not been able to survey the damage yet because roads are still flooded.
