The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.0 magnitude aftershock Friday evening that was felt across Long Island. It was once again centered in the same area of New Jersey that the original earthquake hit.

Long Islanders felt rumbling from the original 4.8 magnitude earthquake across both Nassau and Suffolk counties around 10:20 a.m.

Earthquake Explainer:

The Associated Press reported that tremors lasted several seconds and were felt over 200 miles away.

People across Long Island were literally shaken up by the earthquake on Friday - and many said they thought it was something else at first.

“I had laundry going and we felt the room rumble, and we thought the laundry was unbalanced," said Rhea Garen, of Huntington.

The Town of Hempstead is asking anyone who has structural damage from the earthquake to call the Public Safety office at 516-538-1900.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said there are no reports of any structural damage in the county due to the earthquake. In addition, PSEG Long Island has reported no issues of power or gas issues.

“The feeling among the professionals is everything is safe and everything is secure at this time,” said Blakeman.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said this was one of the largest earthquakes on the East Coast this century.

Hochul also said her office is doing damage assessments, but there are no reports of any damage at this time.
