No celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month would be complete without a mentioned of Southside United, also known as "Los Sures".
For nearly half a century, the nonprofit has become integral resource for the Hispanic community in Williamsburg. Los Sures came to life in 1972 when a small group of housing advocates fought back against delinquent landlords -- an issue that is still, if not more, relevant today.
Los Sures has helped out tenants like Francisca Serrano, who says her landlord neglected her apartment into disrepair.
Its success has also allowed Los Sures to expand its scope in recent years -- like launching a hydroponic farm to grow food for seniors.
