The accused killer of 17-year-old Bronx basketball star Brandon Hendricks appeared in court on Thursday.
Loved ones of Hendricks have been waiting two years for this trial. Hendricks was killed by a stray bullet just days after his high school graduation on June 28, 2020.
"We're here because we've been at every milestone in Brandon's life," said Noel Ellison, Hendricks' uncle. "And this continues, whether we get justice or not there will be no healing for us."
According to the Bronx district attorney, suspect Najhim Luke fired shots at a group of people gathered for a barbecue. One of those shots struck Hendricks.
Luke filed a request for a new attorney which will adjourn the case for another two weeks, with the judge stating Thursday that the defendant is fit to stand trial after a psychiatric evaluation.
News 12 later found out that the barbecue was held in honor of Hendricks graduating from James Monroe High School. He was also set to attend college on a basketball scholarship.
Luke has been indicted with second-degree murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 6.
