The man accused of fatally beating his 3-year-old stepdaughter was arraigned via video Wednesday at the Brooklyn Criminal Courthouse.
Kelsey Smith was arraigned on second-degree murder charges. The arraignment was done through video because Smith remains hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital for self-inflicted wounds.
Smith allegedly killed Jeida Torres after she soiled her diaper while he was baby-sitting her and her 5-year-old brother, Andrew. Police say Andrew Torres witnessed the entire incident. Judge Michael Yavinsky ordered that Smith may not make any contact whatsoever with Andrew.
According to police, Smith tried to take his own life after beating Jeida to death.
Smith's defense attorney requested a psychiatric and mental evaluation for his client. Smith's next court date is scheduled for Friday.
