A man is dead and a police officer is in critical condition after a police-involved shooting at a Brownsville salon Friday.
The violent altercation happened at Goldmine Nail Salon on Mother Gaston Boulevard, when an officer fatally shot a man who hit him in the head with a chair.
Officers were called to the salon at around 5 p.m. when Dewayne Hawkes, 26, began urinating in the middle of the business.
As police tried to take him into custody, officers say a second man, Kwesi Ashun, entered the business and began attacking them. The NYPD says one of the officers fired a Taser, but Ashun continued to attack, grabbing a chair and hitting one of the officers in the head with it.
Authorities say that the officer then fired six shots, killing Ashun.
News 12 is told that that officer is in the hospital in critical but stable condition, in a medically-induced coma.
A second officer was also treated and released from the hospital.
Hawkes has been charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstruction of governmental administration.
