A man died inside Kings County Criminal Court while in police custody, NYPD sources say.
The 46-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive in his holding cell around 10:15 p.m. Friday.
According to police, the man suffered from a medical episode and died at the scene. A source says the man was arrested for stealing food at a Whole Foods Market in Williamsburg on Thursday.
This is the second reported death in custody at the Brooklyn courthouse this year.
Police say the man's identity is pending family notification. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
The Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Defender Services issued a statement that read in part:
“The NYPD’s drive to criminalize poverty has led to the avoidable and unnecessary incarceration and death… Instead of receiving the care he urgently needed, he languished and died in a holding cell…This is a cruel example of the consequences of the NYPD’s failures.”
