Soundview residents say they are heartbroken, but not surprised, after a man was killed in a hit-an-run crash at the dangerous intersection of White Plains Road and Bruckner Boulevard.
The incident happened early Saturday at around 5:30 a.m.
Police told News 12 when they arrived at the scene, they found an unidentified man with severe trauma to his head and body.
The victim was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sources said the vehicle that struck the man fled the scene and went westbound on Bruckner Boulevard.
Community members were heartbroken to hear about the deadly event, but not surprised.
"I look at the cars and I can kind of tell if they're about to just try to speed past or if they're going to not hit me. You kind of got to gauge it a little bit," said one neighbor named Jordan.
A father and son, Fidel and Leonardo, crossing the street said they have come close to an accident with cars that have ran past the red lights.
"They really don't think about pedestrians most of the time, which is sad, but, you know, they should slow down for us," Fidel said.
Drivers in the area also told News 12 they have seen the risks first-hand.
"People try to speed by accidents and it's dangerous," said one driver named Alex.
Detectives had not shared as of Saturday evening the make or model of the vehicle that they are searching for.
