A 22-year-old man received the maximum sentence Wednesday for the 2013 murder of a Brooklyn teenager.
Christian Ferdinand was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after being found guilty in the murder of 14-year-old Shaniesha Forbes.
Prosecutors say he admitted to suffocating Forbes with a pillow in January 2013 because he thought she was pregnant. He later set her body on fire in Gerritsen Beach and dumped it in the water, according to police.
Ferdinand spoke during his sentencing. He denied killing Forbes and said he was sorry for her family's loss.
The medical examiner determined that Forbes was not pregnant at the time of her death.
The judge gave Ferdinand an additional 16 months to four years for tampering with evidence. That means he won't see a parole board until he is well into his 40s.
