Police have a man in custody in connection with two rapes in the Van Dyke housing complex that occurred within the last two and a half weeks.
Police believe that in both cases, the suspect attacked his victims at knifepoint. Even with a suspect in custody, tenants say they?re concerned for their safety. Despite police officers standing guard outside the complex, the tenants say they are now taking matters into their own hands.
Neighbors say they walk around with weapons in case of another attack. One young woman says she carries a baseball bat around with her, and another admits to keeping pepper spray handy. A third woman said she always arranges to meet up with people before entering her building.
Neighbors believe the same man is responsible for both rapes in the houses. They say the rapist must know the area well and some fear he may even live in the building.
The first rape occurred on March 6 and was caught on security camera. The attacker pulled the victim from an elevator and raped her in a stairwell for nearly 30 minutes. The second rape occurred Thursday, when the attacker forced a 19-year-old onto the roof and raped her at knifepoint.
