A Brooklyn man was sentenced Monday for a hit-and-run that left a 12-year-old girl dead and two others injured.
Robert Decarlo, 28, was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison for the 2014 crash that killed Joie Sellers. Decarlo was in a stolen vehicle when he lost control and crashed into Sellers, her little sister and her mother as they walked along Flatlands Avenue. He turned himself in after running away from the scene.
Prosecutors said Decarlo was reckless and selfish to drive 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Decarlo admitted he drove a stolen vehicle during the incident.
In court, he blamed a drug addiction for his actions.
"I wish I could turn back time but I cannot," he said. "I can only make a better future. I hope and pray that one day you can find it in your heart to forgive me. I'm truly sorry."
Sellers' mother, Marcia Landi, says she's not sure if she can forgive Decarlo.
"He'll have his day where he'll have to go before God and be judged," she said.
