A 38-year-old man was shot and killed early Friday morning in Bushwick, and witnesses say they saw the shooter moments before gunfire erupted.
The shooting happened around 1 a.m. near the corner of Pilling Street and Bushwick Avenue. Police say the victim was found with a gunshot wound to the stomach and was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he died.
According to a witness from a nearby bar, the violence started with a confrontation before the gunfire.
“He pulled a knife on him first... then we couldn’t get back in the bar, so we were all out here still waiting for our friends. That’s when he showed up with a gun,” the witness said.
Another witness said she tried to help the victim until first responders arrived. “I tried to do my best to apply compression until the ambulance came. He was alert. He tried to get up — and I told him to stay still, the ambulance is right here,” she said.
Police say the shooter ran from the scene, leaving a vehicle behind. While the NYPD hasn’t confirmed it belonged to the suspect, multiple witnesses believe it did. A police source tells News 12 a weapon was recovered nearby.
As of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made and the victim’s name has not been released pending family notification.
