Police say a 28-year-old man was shot and killed by officers in East Flatbush on Sunday after running from them with a gun in his hand.
It happened around 9 a.m. after a 27-year-old woman called 911, telling dispatchers the man she knew was harassing her outside her door. She also told police she was in the process of getting a restraining order against him.
According to the NYPD, six officers from the 67th Precinct responded and spotted the man who matched her description. They say he took off running, and officers chased him about a block and a half onto Coventry Road.
Police say he had a loaded revolver in his hand during the chase. Officers ordered him several times to drop the weapon, but they say he refused.
Assistant Chief Frank Giordano said at a news conference that after several warnings, one officer fired a single shot that hit the man in the chest.
“After repeated warnings were given to drop his weapon, and the subject did not comply with those orders. The subject was shot once in his chest. We immediately rendered aid to that subject and transported him by patrol car to Kings County Hospital,” Giordano said.
Investigators say the man and the woman knew each other, but the exact relationship is still unclear. Police also confirmed there were two prior domestic incident reports involving them.
The NYPD says the shooting was captured on body camera. The department’s Force Investigation Division is now leading the case.
