An apartment building employee in Melrose was shot late Sunday morning while confronting a man who was allegedly trying to steal work supplies, police sources say.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. inside 508 East 163rd St.

According to the NYPD, the 47-year-old victim saw the man in a restricted personnel-only area.

Police say the victim confronted him as he attempted to leave the building with the stolen goods.

According to investigators, a fight broke out between the two men, during which the alleged thief took out a gun and fired.

The 47-year-old man was shot in the leg.

Paramedics took him to Lincoln Hospital, where he is expected to recover, according to the NYPD.

Police released images of the man they believe pulled the trigger. He is pictured wearing a black sweatshirt with pink writing on the front and black sweatpants with the same pink lettering down the leg.

No arrests have been made as of Sunday night.
