More than 80 homes in the Midwood section of Brooklyn were left without power Friday morning following several manhole fires.
One family says their daughter woke them up at around 4 a.m. after hearing a loud explosion. When they looked out the window, they saw thick smoke billowing out of a manhole.
Con Edison and Verizon dispatched crews to restore power to the affected homes. Con Edison restored power to the area by Friday evening, but Verizon said it could take a few days to fix telephone service because the wires were ?fried.?
Con Edison says the cause of the manhole fires was faulty cables.
