Mayor Eric Adams has appointed a new czar to head up an effort to combat childhood lead poisoning.

Jasmine Blake has been appointed to the role of lead compliance officer in charge of monitoring city agencies.

The committment to comatting lead exposure was started under Mayor Bill de Blasio. Adams says 42 out 46 commitments made by that administration have been reached.

The mayor says because of the continued effort childhood lead exposure has dropped 93% since 2005. However, he says the battle is not over and that's why he is implementing new thresholds for lead levels.

Under the threshold, the new standard is 0.5 milligrams of lead per square centimeter of paint as opposed to the previous standard of one milligram.

Adams says NYCHA will first focus on apartments with children under six to make sure the standards are met. The agency has also launched an abatement program that's supported by $1.4 billion in city capital funds. It also includes temporary relocation for residents while their apartments are stripped of lead.

Enforcement will also be stepped up against landlords who are failing to meet lead-related obligations.
