Mayor Eric Adams announced new locations around the city where homeless encampments will be cleared out. This comes as part of his blueprint for the city's economic recovery plan.
The mayor plans on offering safe havens with shelter access and other services to New Yorkers living on the streets. Meanwhile, those cleanup efforts have already started around the city.
Homeless encampments at Poe Park will now relocate in the Bronx.
The first safe haven opened Tuesday on Morris Avenue and it will be just one of several locations opening throughout the city. This week, 350 beds will be available to New Yorkers, with a total of 500 beds available within the next few weeks.
The cleanup effort was caught on camera earlier this week in Williamsburg as city workers threw out tents and other belongings that were set up on the street under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. While Adams anticipates this move will get criticism, he is sure it will be the best decision for the city in the long run.
This comes just a month after the mayor announced the Subway Safety Plan which partnered local organizations with the NYPD to enforce MTA rules and help get the homeless out of the subway system.
