Mayor Eric Adams provided an update Sunday morning on the city's COVID-19 response efforts during a visit to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.
He praised the staff there for their hard work during the pandemic, as well as last week when a gunman opened fire in a waiting room lobby.
The mayor says that COVID-19 cases are rapidly declining. He also said that New York City is leading the country when it comes to vaccinations and boosters.
The mayor says 75% of New Yorkers are fully vaccinated, which includes 85% of adults and 50% of children ages 5 and over.
So far, more than 16 million doses have been given out, including 2.7 million doses of the booster.
"The message is clear, get vaccinated and stay up to date with your booster,” said the mayor. “This pandemic is still here. It's claiming lives. In January alone, New York City has lost more than 2,300 of our neighbors, our friends, and our families, and it's impactful."
The city also says they are providing at-risk New Yorkers with free at-home delivery of COVID-19 antiviral pills. They're encouraging those at risk who test positive to reached out to their doctors so they can get their hands on this treatment.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says COVID-19 cases have dropped by 90% since the Jan. 7 peak. The governor says this is on account of New Yorkers getting vaccinated and receiving their booster shots.
