Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that $150 million will be going toward park improvements across the city, including Betsy Head Park in Brooklyn.
De Blasio says the funding is about fairness and equality for city residents who rely on parks the most. Park officials add that the funding will benefit those who cannot afford fancy vacations but still need a place to boost both physical and mental health.
The funds will be used to improve what are called anchor parks, and there is one in each borough. Each anchor will receive $30 million for improvements including ball parks, soccer fields, playground equipment and more.
The five anchor parks were chosen based on the number of people that would benefit in the neighborhood, as well as the need for improvement.
