Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city's new Vision Zero action plan to keep New Yorkers safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The plan will hone in on the 7 percent of the streets in the city that account for nearly half of pedestrian fatalities. 

The mayor says those streets will be addressed through redesigned intersections, more enforcement or more education.

The new actions this year will include modified signal timing to reduce speeding, a driveway safety program to address issues with vehicles crossing sidewalks, and adding exclusive pedestrian crossing time at feasible intersections.

Maureen Landers, who was struck by a car on Fourth Avenue as she was crossing 78th Street in 2009, says the city needs these changes.

"I would like to have confidence that my children can travel the streets of New York and Bay Ridge safely," she told News 12.
