Mayor Bill de Blasio called for an end to the death penalty following the execution of a 40-year-old man late Thursday.
The mayor retweeted a post shared by a journalist about the execution and responded, saying: "This is absolutely sickening. Brandon Bernard should still be alive. Abolish the death penalty."
Bernard was convicted in Texas in 1999 for the murders of youth ministers Stacie and Todd Bagley. He is the youngest person in the country to receive a death sentence in nearly seven decades.
De Blasio was just one prominent figure to express his disdain for the execution. Several celebrities and activists had called on President Donald Trump to lessen Bernard's sentence, but a source says he didn't intervene because of the violent nature of the crime.
Reality star and now a prison reform activist, Kim Kardashian-West, also expressed her frustration with the execution.
She wrote her thoughts on Twitter, saying, "I'm so messed up right now. They killed Brandon. He was such a reformed person. So hopeful and positive until the end. More importantly he is sorry, so sorry for the hurt and pain he has caused others."
