COVID-19 cases are skyrocketing across the country, reaching over 100,000 new infections in a day for the first time since February.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says cases are also rising citywide, but luckily hospitalizations are increasing at a slower rate.
Seventy-nine new hospitalizations were reported in 24 hours as the city’s positivity rate is at 2.86% as of Sunday.
The delta variant is causing the major spread of cases, accounting for 72% of all new COVID-19 cases in New York City over a four-week span. De Blasio is expected to announce new mask mandates in the city on Monday.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bronx is reporting a substantial level of community transmission.
Reports show more than 80% of Americans live in a county deemed to have “high” or “substantial” transmission of the coronavirus.
The CDC says people in those areas should wear masks in indoor public settings regardless of vaccination status.
Health experts like CNN medical analyst Dr. Leana Wen says getting the vaccine is the best way to help yourself and others.
“Vaccines protect you, but also vaccines protect other people around you,” Wen says. “In a way, this is similar to not driving while intoxicated. We have an obligation to keep others safe in our society.”
