Mayor Bill de Blasio says three Brooklyn residents are among several newly confirmed coronavirus cases in the city.

The mayor says the city has 12 confirmed cases, including seven that were confirmed Saturday morning.

Those include two women in Brooklyn who are in their 60s and 70s. They became symptomatic after returning on a cruise from Egypt with a known cluster of cases, and they are both at home in mandatory quarantine, the mayor says. Additionally, a man from Brooklyn who is in his 30s is hospitalized in serious condition after returning from a trip to Italy.

The mayor said that other new confirmed cases include two family members of an Upper West Side man who tested positive, an Uber driver hospitalized in Queens who drives on Long Island, and a Manhattan man who tested positive after spending time with a COVID-19 patient in Chile.

"We are seeing more community transmission between people who have no direct connection to travel to one of the affected countries,” de Blasio said in a statement. "I urge New Yorkers to remain vigilant -- not alarmed -- and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones. As we continue to see more cases of COVID-19, we will be providing as much guidance to New Yorkers as possible to keep our city safe.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency over the virus Saturday to help free up resources to respond to the outbreak. His office announced Friday evening that there are 89 cases across New York state.
