Mayor: Totowa police chief faces charges in Massachusetts

Totowa Police Chief Carmen Veneziano has been arrested on charges stemming from an incident in Massachusetts, the town's mayor has confirmed.

"Our chief is being held at the Bergen County Jail awaiting extradition to Massachusetts," Totowa Mayor John Coiro told News 12.

The mayor said he has not seen the charges against the chief, but added that officials were "quite surprised."

According to Bergen County Jail records, an inmate with the name Carmen Veneziano is listed as a "fugitive from justice" with an offense date of Sept. 14, 2025. The detainer was issued by authorities in Massachusetts, jail records show. His commitment date at the correctional facility was Friday.

Totowa police referred all questions on the chief's arrest to the mayor's office. News 12 has also reached out to the Bergen County Sherif's Office and the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police and is awaiting replies. Massachusetts State Police also directed inquiries on the matter to the Totowa Police Department.
