A plan is now in the works so that Bronx residents will one day be able to have full access to the waterfront with a new greenway.
Mayor Eric Adams announced a historic plan to expand the Harlem River Greenway into the Bronx to kick off the spring season on Wednesday.
The plan would expand the greenway from Randall’s Island to Van Cortlandt Park and introduce 7 new miles of outdoor green space for New Yorkers to enjoy biking, running and relaxing.
The project is one of the ways the city is trying to unite communities divided by infrastructure, such as the Major Deegan and Cross Bronx expressways in the Bronx.
While advocates say that the project could take decades, they acknowledge it’s a step in the right direction.
“It’s going to allow the people of this community to have a pathway along the waterfront… we have over 500 miles of waterfront in this city and all of it should be explored,” said Adams. “All of it should be developed for people to walk, for people to ride, for people to just be encouraged to experience the outdoors.”
The mayor’s team says it will be holding community workshops on the expansion starting next week to get an idea of how people plan to use the new greenway space.
