Kids and teens from around the Bedford-Stuyvesant area got the chance to learn about historical and cultural sites around their neighborhood through a special program.
At the nonprofit Children of Promise's gym on Saturday, young people ages 9 through 15 gathered to present their findings from months of research, as proud parents and mentors looked on.
The program was born last year when a volunteer with the organization saw a mosaic in the neighborhood that showed 18 significant places in Bed-Stuy. He was inspired to create a program where kids could be matched with mentors in fields like architecture and city planning to learn more about the sites and the mentors' professions.
The group hopes to expand the program this year as more kids get involved.
