In the wake of the murder of two NYPD officers, organizations representing minority policemen are coming together to honor their fallen comrades.
The National Latino Officers Association, the Grand Council of Guardians, and the group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care held a prayer vigil Sunday at the site where Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were killed.
"It's important to show that we are united in this front," said Anthony Miranda, executive chairman of the National Latino Officers Association.
But in the days following the fatal ambush, that united front has been tested. First came harsh critisms from Pat Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Then hundreds of officers turned their backs to Mayor de Blasio in protest at Ramos' funeral.
Representatives from the organizations at the vigil said they do plan to speak out on how to mend the relationship between the NYPD and the community, but added that right now their only focus is to honor and remember the fallen officers.
Wake and funeral arrangements have been announced for Officer Liu. The wake will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ralph Aievoli and Son funeral home on 65th Street in Brooklyn. The funeral will be at the same location at 10 a.m. Sunday.
