Monmouth poll: Majority of Americans see US Supreme Court as ‘out of touch’
The United States Supreme Court will be starting its new session on Monday, but a new Monmouth University Poll finds that a majority of Americans view the court as “out of touch.”
The poll found that 59% of Americans say that the current Supreme Court is “out of touch with the values and beliefs of most Americans.” Eighty-three percent of Democrats and 62% of independents felt the court was out of touch; 32% of Republicans agreed.
The poll also found that 54% of Americans disapprove of the job the justices are doing. Poll officials say that support started to decline following the May leak of a decision that the Supreme Court was planning to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision on abortions.
“The Supreme Court was not on the radar for many Americans until this summer. Recent decisions have moved some from being on the fence to having a negative opinion of the court,” said Patrick Murray, director of Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The poll also found widespread support for setting term limits for justices, but few Americans backed expanding the size of the court.
