More human remains were found in Coney Island on Wednesday, just one day after a human skull was discovered in the bushes near the boardwalk, according to police. Investigators say the skull was first reported to 911 on Tuesday near Riegelmann Boardwalk between West 32nd and West 33rd streets. The area is behind fencing and not a spot people typically walk through. Crime scene investigators returned to the site Wednesday to continue searching. That’s when a police source says they recovered additional bones. Video from the scene shows the Office of Chief Medical Examiner placing a large bag of remains onto a stretcher and wheeling it away. Police say they do not yet know whether the remains belong to a man or a woman, and they haven’t shared how long the bones may have been there. The investigation is ongoing. Neighbors told News 12 they’re stunned something like this went unnoticed in an area they pass by every day. “Wow, I’m kind of surprised,” said Jean Theodore, who lives nearby. “People go back there for cans and bottles. I just can’t see that.” The medical examiner will work to identify the remains and determine what happened. News 12 will update this story as more information becomes available.
