Mother: 6-year-old with speech delay left on bus in Queens
A mother from Brownsville says her son was left on his school bus and woke up at a bus depot in Queens.
Ceira Funn says she thought her 6-year-old son Noah was on his usual ride to school Wednesday morning. But hours after putting him on the bus, she says P.S. 156's assistant principal called saying that he never made it to school.
"He was asleep on the bus, and the bus driver left him," says Funn. "He didn't do his job."
Noah's school is only about five minutes from his home. His mom says he ended up nearly an hour away, alone and cold.
Funn says she isn't convinced something like this won't happen again, especially because her son has a speech delay. She calls what happened blatant negligence.
"I'm livid, like I'm not understanding why didn't I even get a call from the bus company," says Funn.
That company, All-American School Bus Corporation, did not return calls from Funn or News 12.
The city Department of Education says it has taken action, adding, "Safety always comes first, and this incident was reported for investigation. The driver has been suspended and we are working with the school and family to provide follow-up support."
Funn hopes the "support" the DOE is referring to means better trained drivers, so that another child does not slip through the cracks.
