A new Multimillion-dollar project is set to bring new life to Bush Terminal, turning it into an area for people who work in the garment industry.
The area of Sunset Park along the waterfront will look slightly different in a couple of years.
The city is planning the Made in NYC Campus at Bush Terminal. It will bring a garment production hub designed specifically for businesses in the clothing industry.

“For people that are working in pattern making, sample making, cut and sew and really just create a space for them to grow their businesses,” says Krystin Hence, VP of construction for NYCEDC.

The hub will offer spaces ranging from 2,000 to 20,000-square feet and is expected to bring 1,500 jobs

”To hire local people that can work in these manufacturing jobs in Sunset Park,” says Hence.

The new project will cost the city $136 million, and it will be built on nine acres at the Bush Terminal.

As part of the plans, the buildings that have been there since the early 1900s will be renovated, combining the old with the new.

"We're actually looking very closely at the buildings and keeping certain things like the basic structure, the basic openings of windows,” says Mimi Hoang, a principal at nARCHITECTS.

However, the new development won't just be for the garment businesses that move in. Public spaces will be created incorporating the Bush Terminal park.

"People who just want to come from the neighborhood to come and have a nice space near the waterfront. Also, people who are working here could go out during lunch or before and after work to take advantage of it,” says Katherine Dewkett, site manager for Dewberry Engineers.

The work is expected to begin this fall and is slated to be completed by 2021.
