The NAACP is suing the city of Trenton, the city’s police director and unidentified police officers over a shooting last month that paralyzed a Burlington County man.

Police say Jajuan Henderson, a Black man, was sitting in a car when officers approached him.

Affidavits sent to News 12 state Henderson attempted to escape and almost hit an officer.

The NAACP says that officers began yelling at Henderson, who tried to use his cellphone when police approached. They say that the officers broke Henderson’s car window and shot him in the neck, paralyzing him from the chest down.

Henderson was unarmed.

"I just lost another son a few months back, and I could have easily lost my other son and his daughter, a father, for absolutely for no reason at all,” says Henderson’s mother Gia Henderson. “I'm here to get justice for my son Jajuan, and I want the Trenton Police Crime Unit and the officers who were involved in that shooting that night to be accountable."

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating Henderson, who is charged with four counts of aggravated assault and attempting to hurt police officers.

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the Trenton Police Department for the shooting, after the state Attorney General’s Office transferred the case due to a conflict of interest.
