Neighbors in Fort Hamilton are sounding the alarm about a potential danger lurking beneath one of Brooklyn’s most iconic landmarks — the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
People who walk underneath the bridge along Fort Hamilton Parkway say chunks of concrete have been falling from the structure above.
“It does concern me because I walk here all the time with my dog,” said neighbor Peter Gonzalez. “You never know what could possibly come down on my head or my dog’s head.”
News 12 found several large pieces of broken concrete near Marine Avenue, not far from an ongoing construction site. Council Member Justin Brannan’s office confirmed it has received multiple complaints about the issue.
“This could hit a kid, an older person — it’s dangerous,” said another neighbor. “With the amount of taxes we pay in this city, this should be a priority.”
According to the MTA, the work is part of a long-term project to rehabilitate and rebuild the bridge’s ramps.
Lifelong Fort Hamilton resident Conor says bits of concrete falling from the bridge isn’t new — but hopes repairs will be completed soon.
“I feel like the whole point of the construction is to fix it,” Conor said. “It’s already super old, might as well fix it.”
The MTA did not answer News 12’s specific question about the falling debris, but said crews are inspecting the concrete piers within a protected work zone. The project will replace parts of the original 1960s structures and reconfigure several outdated ramps.
