The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) has received approval from the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees to open a second charter school in Brooklyn.
The UFT says the school will serve students in grades six?12. UFT President Randi Weingarten says the school will open in September with 125 sixth-graders in a public school building in East New York.
Weingarten says school class size will be restricted to 25 students per class and a college prep curriculum is planned. Subjects to be taught include English, math, science, and social studies as well as foreign languages, physical education and the arts.
The new charter school still needs approval from the Board of Regents.
