A new Citi Bike station will be built on Manhattan Avenue between Ainsley and Devoe streets, but residents are concerned about safety and parking issues.
Many parking spots are set to be replaced by Citi Bikes, and people who live in the homes nearby are upset. Many of the residents are older and say finding parking is already a hassle in their neighborhood, fearing how much worse it may get once those spaces are removed.
Residents also claim they were never told about the project, saying they would have not been on board had they been contacted. According to the Department of Transportation, they solicited community input by notifying the local community board, elected officials, and property owners.
With the project slated to move forward, residents who want the station to be put in a commercial corridor say they worry about access to emergency vehicles and overall safety.
The DOT provided the following statement in response:
“DOT is adding stations to the Citi Bike’s existing service area to meet the tremendous growth in rides we’ve seen in recent years, helping ensure riders can reliably find bikes and parking nearby their trip origins and destinations.”
The DOT added that they will continue to incorporate community input for future plans.
