New G trains make track debut
The train doors are 8 inches wider than before - allowing more commuters to enter and exit the train at once.
Some New Yorkers had the opportunity on Tuesday to be the very first riders on the G train, as it hit the tracks for its debut.
The biggest physical difference is that the new model G trains are known as "gangway" trains.
It means that the train no longer has doors between each car. The gangways to connect each car, keeping the entire train open. In this case, people can walk from one end to the other.
The train doors are 8 inches wider than before - allowing more commuters to enter and exit the train at once. The MTA also hopes that this will help cut down on the amount of time that trains will be stuck in the stations.
The train has sulfates lighting as well. The vehicle is brighter all around. The train doors light up green when they open and red when they close.
Larry Geddes was one of the first to ride. He believes the gangway doors make it easier to escape it you need to while riding.
“There are transit systems all over the world that have these trains,” he says. “It is about time we have them, too!"
Not all riders are convinced.
Colin Pratasevich believes the gangway style will “make it harder to get away from someone who's causing trouble."
The G train line will be completely replaced with four more trains in the coming months.
