A new pilot program is bringing high-tech garbage bins to Brooklyn in an effort to win the city's war on rats.
The NYC Department of Sanitation just rolled out 76 Empire Bins at 19 schools in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill last week.
The bins, which are meant for building with more than 31 units, are the first to come to the borough and the second location in New York City to get them.
The pilot program first launched in West Harlem over the summer.
"They blend right in, the public has been incredibly supportive, they've seen far fewer rats," said Joshua Goodman, deputy commissioner of Public Affairs & Customer Experience for the NYC Department of Sanitation.
The program is part of DSNY's efforts to contain trash across the city, getting it off the curb and out of reach from rats.
"The trash that we set out every day, 44 million pounds is the all-night, all-you-can-eat rat buffet," said Goodman."
The bins are equipped with technology so they can only be opened with a key card that is given to a building super.
Goodman said DSNY plans to expand the program to high-density residential buildings in Brooklyn next year.
